CEN WSLT Competency SIG

Putting the pieces together – actions for European standardisation program for competency-based learning

Theme: Taking stock of a few years with European and international projects in the domain: What do we know? What are the future visions for Competency-based learning?

Format: 20 min presentation; 5 min Q&A on each project. The presentations should focus on a) a quick overview of the project, including scope; b) which recommendations coming out of the project should be picked up by standards initiatives?

ISO/IEC JTC1 SC36 is developing a Conceptual Reference Model for Competencies and related objects. If possible, the presentations should try describe where their project fits in this (or any other overarching frameworks) as a first validation of the benefits of this kind of approach.

What is mentioned about competency in different projects:

Facilitator: Jan Pawlowski, Chair CEN WS-LT

Input Materials (CEN Work, ICT Standards Work Programme, Ideas)
Goal:

  • To identify and scope CEN WSLT/CEN TC353 pre/standardisation proposal.
  • To identify research projects for the upcoming ICT 2011 calls.
  • To summarize the landscape of competence activities in Europe

Theme: Integrating what we know - coming up with an itemised plan for further standards projects and research proposals

Method: The session will start in a discussion on the landscape of competence activities (e.g. using a concept map with current activities). The basis are current models and activities for competence descriptions and services (e.g., ELM, INLOC). During the session, potential new standardization activities should be developed in smaller groups (each group representing different interest groups to start the harmonization process).

Step 1: Describe your item / project / approach

Step 2: Validating the maturity (idea, research in progress, adopted / validated, widely used, ...)

Step 3: Identify competing / related / mutual benefitial approaches

Step 4: Develop ideas for a standardization work item

Step 5: Validate its necessity using the WSLT criteria

  • Introduction to workgroup session – by Jan Pawlowski: Landscape of competence models and approaches
  • Workgroup session by topic (e.g., competence services, competence guidelines, context descriptions, ...)
  • Summary of workgroup, next steps

The workshop ends no later than 5 PM
